Silicon (Si)

Definition: Silicon is a nonmetallic element that has both amorphous and crystalline properties. Silicone is found in silica and silicates in the Earth's crust. Silicon is used in many things including glass, concrete, brick, pottery, and silicones.

The name silicon comes from the latin word "silex" which means flint.

Silicon is classified as a metalloid and is located in group 14 in the Periodic Table.
